At a glance

A fuller picture of the journeys Americans take abroad.

For Celtic Creative, a meaningful trip begins well before departure: in the time allowed for planning, the places a traveler chooses to linger, and the experiences that turn a route into a story. This reference brings together the most useful numbers behind those choices.

The figures below describe U.S. residents traveling internationally in 2024. Unless a figure says otherwise, the detailed traveler characteristics refer to people flying to overseas destinations, rather than Canada or Mexico.

Methodology and sources

One primary source, kept clear and close to every number.

Every statistic on this page comes from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Travel and Tourism Office, using its 2024 Survey of International Air Travelers. The office reported the annual figures for calendar year 2024 and published the traveler-characteristic release in 2026.

The survey’s detailed overseas figures describe U.S. residents traveling by air to destinations outside the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The first statistic includes international travel to overseas destinations, Canada, and Mexico. We have kept those two scopes distinct rather than blending them.
